UIL District 25-5A Cross Country Championships - 10/6

Varsity (and alternate) runners need to be at school by 5:55 and ready to leave at 6 a.m.

JV runners need to be at school by 6:30 a.m. 

We'll take one bus, but two trips to get everyone over to the park.

Here's the schedule (these are rolling start times)

Varsity girls: 8:00 a.m.
Varsity boys: 9:00 a.m.
JV girls: 10:00 a.m.
JV boys: 11:00 a.m.
Awards 1:00 p.m.

We should be back to school and kids should be back in class for last period at 2:15 p.m. (and I hope they have time to shower). In fact, we may take the first group over a little early.
We'll have six trays of sandwiches for the kids (including PB&J for the non-meat eaters) and those will be at the tent at about 12:00.

Riding the bus - arrive at LASA by 8:15 a.m. Bus leaves at 8:30.

Arriving to the meet - please be at the tent by the following times:

Varsity girls - 9:30 a.m.

Varsity boys - 10:00 a.m.

JV girls - 10:30 a.m.

JV boys - 11:00 a.m.

Boys Varsity and Junior Varsity: 5k

Girls Varsity 5-6A: 5k

Girls Varsity 1-4A & Junior Varsity: 2 miles

Varsity Teams: 10 Runners allowed

Junior Varsity Teams: unlimited


Each race will start on the hockey field adjacent to the stadium track. The course terrain is fairly flat and fast primarily over mowed grass and mulch. Spikes and racing flats will be appropriate.

Day of Event Schedule:

6:00 – 7:20 AM Course open for warm-up and walk thrus. We encourage everyone (all the teams) to walk the course before the first race otherwise; it will be close for safety reasons.


7:15 am Coaches Meeting

7:30 am: 5-6A Girls Varsity 5k

8:00 am : 5-6A Boys Varsity 5k

8:30 am: 1-4A Girls Varsity 2 miles

9:00 am: 1-4A Boys Varsity 5k

9:30 am: JV Girls 2 miles

10:00 am: JV Boys Varsity 5k

  • Bus will depart school at 6 a.m.
  • Runners who are getting a ride need to be there by 6:30 a.m.

Information relevant to students:
 - You are required to take the bus to and from the meet.
 - Only the first two periods of the day are excused. You are responsible for showing up to your third and fourth period classes.
 - It is possible we will not have access to the showers on this day due to evacuees. It is recommended you bring whatever supplies you find necessary to comfortably sit through the remainder of the day.

Our first meet is this Saturday. The bus will be departing the school at 7:00 a.m. sharp, so if you are riding the bus, please be here by 6:45 a.m. Again, if you are running late, please send me a message on Remind. Parents, if you are driving to the meet, runners need to be there at our tent by 8:00 a.m.

We will be stopping to get BBQ after the meet, so please bring cash to cover lunch.

Welcome to the LBJ Cross Country 2017 season!

A message from Coach Bergeron and Coach Croston:

Welcome to the 2017 Cross Country season! Here are a few details and important dates for you.

Parent meeting: We'll have a parent meeting on Thursday, August 10th at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria. Please plan on attending.

You can find all things cross country at our website –


We will have two preseason practices - Tuesday, August 15th and Thursday, August 17th at 7:00 a.m. We'll meet by the baseball field to take care of paperwork. Once school begins, practices will begin promptly at 6 a.m. Please meet outside of the gym.

All Cross Country events can be found on the calendar at www.lbjxc.org/calendar

FORMS: ALL athletes must complete the physical/UIL paperwork before you can begin official practices on August 15th. Forms are found online at http://austinisdathletics.com/home-2/important-forms/.

New to LASA: if you are new to LASA this year, and might be running on varsity, you need to complete the Previous Athletic Participation Form and get it to me ASAP. You can download the form at http://www.uiltexas.org/athletics/forms.

Meet dates: please check the calendar on the website for the meet dates. I expect that everyone will participate in the AISD invitational on Sept 1, and I hope that most athletes will participate in every meet.

Parent volunteers: we are in need of parent volunteers to help set up and tear down at each meet. If you are interested in helping, or are interested in coordinating the volunteers, please let me know.

Also - our first meet is Lockhart on 8/26 - it's coming up fast! Runners will be receiving a form to sign up through Remind from Cameron shortly.

Summer Training + More 2017

Hello runners! As summer is coming up and we’re going to have new and returning runners joining the program, I figured I should write a post to let everyone know what’s happening in the coming weeks.

JV/Varsity and Rec groups

First, varsity is going to become more competitive this year as we’ll have returning runners ready to train hard and some new speedy freshmen. Additionally, the number of recreational runners is expanding. This year, we’ll be dividing the team into two main groups in order to make sure we can accommodate everyone. We’ll warm up and cool down together as a team, but the workouts will look different.

  • Recreational: We’re going to have a rec group for everyone who wants to come out to run Cross Country as a way to train, to get in shape, or have fun. We love having these runners on our team, and we’ll have different workouts for this group to make sure they can get what they want out of practice.
  • Competitive: On the other hand, our competitive workouts will be more controlled and structured. Runners in the competitive group train to compete at meets, and we’ll be keeping track of their times to give them paces during workouts. Expect a full training regimen as part of this group and to come to practice and work hard. This group will be further subdivided into two groups but with the same workouts:
    • Varsity: Varsity runners, and those on the cusp of varsity, will do the harder version of each workout. This might mean more repetitions, longer distance, or a faster pace. We will consistently expect hard work at practice and a good attitude toward teammates. Special uniforms will be awarded to varsity runners, and they should serve as role models for the rest of the team.
    • JV: Recreational runners that have an interest in competing and runners who want to compete without the commitment of the varsity group are welcome to join the JV group. JV will have an easier form of the workout and will train with the varsity group.

And that gets us to…

Summer Training and Varsity tryouts!

This summer, like the last, we will have optional workouts at Austin High and long runs meeting at Barton Springs pool. These will start on June 5th the first week of summer, and continue up until school starts. Check the Calendar page to stay up to date.

  • Workouts: Monday and Wednesday at Austin High from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm.
    • For some of these workouts, we will run on the trail right next to the school. It might be a good idea to bring a phone because, given we’re all in different shape, we’ll likely split into groups. Every group must have a phone on them.
  • Long Runs: Saturdays meeting at Barton Springs at 6:45 am.
    • After we run, we’ll hop into Barton Springs pool while it’s still free and we’ll usually go out to breakfast afterward somewhere around, so it might a good idea to bring a towel, or an extra shirt to change into. Also, bring money if you would like to have breakfast. If you don’t want to attend breakfast or hop in the pool, you’re welcome to leave at 7:30 to 7:45, when you get back from your run. For transportation to breakfast, captains and other runners can drive to breakfast. If necessary, you should get parental permission before getting in anyone’s car. The drivers will not be liable for driving someone without permission, so please tell your driver if you need an alternate method of transportation.

Varsity Tryouts

As an effect of increased competitiveness on the varsity team, completing a tryout will be necessary to run on varsity. The reason this is important now is that in order to run varsity, regular attendance at summer practices or participation in an approved training group will be a key factor in making the varsity team. The tryout will take place in the first or second week of school and will consist of 8 laps on the track (3200m/2mi), so work over the summer will be necessary to run on varsity.

How to Cross Country 101

Hello incoming freshman/new Cross Country runner! 
This page contains what you should know if you're thinking about doing cross country in 2017.
  • Glad you asked! It's a sport offered at LBJ High School centered around running. Anyone can run cross country, and people have tons of different reasons for running. For more information about XC, check out the about page.

  • We're going to have some events and get-togethers coming up, so stay tuned! All Cross Country events can be found on our handy-dandy Calendar.
  • Stay tuned for updates on Summer Training. We'll be coming out more information soon.
  • Also, we will have training this summer, and we'd love to see you there!
Where can I find hilarious biographies that the captains have lovingly written just for you?
  • Great question! We are using a Remind group, for real time communication with the runners, and a Google Group, for email communication with the parents. You can check them out on our Communication page.
  • Even if you're not a Cross Country runner right now, you should still join the Remind and/or Google Group to get preseason updates.
What do I need to run Cross Country?
  • A valid physical, so you can run once official training starts. Our Physicals and Forms pages has a link to just what you need.
  • If you're going to take Cross Country as a PE credit1, you're going to need to put it on your Course Sheet. See the Course Guide for more information. Don't worry, although you'll get grades for it and attendance will be recorded, it doesn't take up a period on schedule.
  • Enthusiasm! Cross Country can be loads of fun, but you'll only get out of it what you put in.

The LBJXC Bare Necessities, Round 2!

With our first practice coming up Tuesday at 6am, the captains thought it would be useful if there was a checklist to know exactly what to bring. 
Please take a list below, as it will help you be prepared for early Tuesday morning.
  • Water bottle 
  • Food for breakfast afterward 
  • Change of clothes
  • Change of shoes 
  • Shampoo, conditioner, and body soap 
  • Hairbrush/Comb 
  • Deodorant/Antiperspirant 
  • Plastic bag for wet clothes 
  • An old towel 
  • Shower curtains (for girls) 
  • Toothbrush & toothpaste* 
  • Makeup* 
  • A locker upstairs to put your clothes in* 
*optional items, all others are recommended

IMPORTANT: If you haven't turned in a physical yet, please do so on Monday, August 21st, so you will be able to practice on Tuesday.
